Positions available as Editor and Reviews Editor of New Zealand Studies in Applied Linguistics

Position: Editor

The Applied Linguistics Association of New Zealand is seeking a new editor for New Zealand Studies in Applied Linguistics. NZSAL is an established national journal that has been published for over 20 years. In 2008 it went from one to two annual issues, each with 3 to 5 full-length articles, short reports, and book reviews. Issues are formatted in June and November for online publication in July and December.

Please note: This is not a paid position; it is service to the academic community for someone with an academic position. The time commitment is variable, but is approximately 80-160 hours annually.  Editors usually hold the position for five years. The first year, 2017, will be a co-editorship with the outgoing editor, with full responsibility to be assumed in 2018.

The position involves:

  • Editorial management of the journal
    • Receiving and reviewing manuscripts
    • Determining whether manuscripts are within the scope of NZSAL
    • Arranging for double-blind peer review
    • Advising authors of the outcome of the review process
    • Supporting novice authors in understanding reviews
    • Editing and proofreading submissions
    • Formatting final submissions
    • Formatting journal for online publication
  • Editorial oversight of the journal on behalf of the publishers (ALANZ)
    • Setting editorial policy in consultation with the ALANZ Executive
    • Reporting to ALANZ AGM annually
    • Upholding ethical publishing standards
    • Maintaining journal records

Required:

  • Membership (or willingness to apply for membership) in ALANZ
  • Actively involvement in applied linguistics in New Zealand
  • Publications in several peer-reviewed applied linguistics journals
  • Familiarity with both qualitative and quantitative research
  • Excellent English language skills

Preferable:

  • MA and PhD supervision experience
  • Editorial and proofreading experience
  • Long document formatting experience
  • Expertise in more than one type of qualitative and quantitative research

Position: Reviews Editor

The main duties of the Reviews Editor are to recruit and correspond with reviewers; request books from publishers; edit review drafts, and send published reviews to the publishers.
